We are delighted to release advanced model launch information for the all-new Kia Sportage.
Following the unveiling of the new Sportage earlier this year at the Geneva Motorshow in March – where the Sportage was singled out by journalists and industry experts as a ‘star of the show’ – we are pleased to announce that KMUK has secured an early limited production of RHD units to fulfil demand and commence the start of sales earlier than anticipated.
DYNAMIC, SLEEK NEW CROSSOVER
The new generation of Sportage, designed by Peter Schreyer, has been completely redesigned for today’s competitive marketplace. Recognising early in the design development stages that the compact SUV segment was undergoing significant shifts, the team identified that traditional compact SUVs would play increasingly smaller roles in the years to come, and that a ‘crossover’ would meet the needs of buyers of the future. The first concept for new Sportage was the ‘Kue’ model shown at the Detroit Motor Show in 2007 (pictured above right).
Long before economic and environmental pressures had started to impact on buying patterns, Kia decided to focus on a different set of priorities in the creation of the all-new Sportage. The new model is a five-door, five-seat crossover designed to meet the requirements of young, active families who lead busy, primarily urban-centric lifestyles.
The definition of a crossover is essentially a vehicle which takes the popular and successful design cues of an SUV but combines them with the design features, driveability and versatility of passenger car.
This means the new Sportage combines the higher-than-average ground clearance, raised seating position and commanding view of an SUV, with the sleek looks, high shoulder line and fast windscreen angle of a coupé – a true crossover in other words. Add to this superb, car-like ride and handling (designed and tested specifically on UK roads) and a significantly greener conscience in regards to fuel economy, CO2 emissions and cost of ownership, and you have a truly modern vehicle to suit a wide range of customer needs.
Exterior
New Sportage is longer, lower and wider than the SUV model it succeeds. It also weighs approximately 90kg less and has a sleeker aerodynamic profile. All of this has ensured that it is not only more stylish and sporty, but also more environmentally friendly.
Sporting the now-familiar Kia family grille – the ‘tiger nose’ – all First Edition models benefit from a chrome grille with matching chrome beltline mouldings and door handles. Other design cues include widened front & rear tracks to enhance stability and driving enjoyment and a reduced ground clearance to improve fuel consumption and CO2. This at the same time reflects that the car’s role is increasingly less likely to be as a traditional off-roader; but it is still more than capable when called upon to perform in these conditions however.
Sleek and rakish, the Sportage features a steep shoulder line and slim glass-housing to emphasise its more athletic and muscular looks. Completing the looks are LED daytime running lights, stylish silver roof rails, large wing mirrors and a striking reverse-angle C-pillar which improves the view out for rear passengers.
Interior
The spacious five-door, five-seat cabin is as dynamic as the exterior and is dominated by a multi-tier dashboard that narrows as it sweeps in from the sides towards the middle, leading to an eye-catching centre console. The concept of the interior focuses on innovation of technology and spaciousness – the high seating position makes for easy access and all-round visibility, while the ergonomic dash with well-laid out instruments and switchgear maximise driver comfort.
The main feature of the dash is a stylish centre console stack featuring a superb audio system with an RDS Radio and CD player and USB/AUX ports for external MP3 connection. The high-tech look is followed through to the sporty 3D-style instrument cluster and thick-rimmed steering wheel. Instrumentation and information displays feature the latest Kia-family red illumination, as showcased on Sorento, new cee’d and Venga.
Dimensions
The longer bodyshell created for Sportage ensures that cabin space is maximised, in particular regards to front and rear passenger legroom which increase +13mm and +18mm respectively.
Luggage space is also impressive with 564 litres of space with the rear seats in position. Utilising the 60:40 split folding rear sears however, means that the space can be maximised to a cavernous 1,353 litres to accommodate even the bulkiest loads.
‘FIRST EDITION’
As highlighted above, KMUK is able to offer the all-new Sportage on sale months earlier than expected. For a limited time, we have secured a limited number of cars – named “First Edition” – powered by the new 2.0 litre R-family common-rail diesel engine, and featuring Kia’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system. The 2.0 CRDi engine develops 134bhp at 4,000rpm and delivers 320Nm of torque from just 1,800rpm, giving it a better power-to-weight and torque-to-weight ratio than the outgoing Sportage with the older 2.0 CRDi engine. Yet it is simultaneously more fuel-efficient and kinder to the environment.
Mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, the model accelerates quicker and has a higher top-speed of 112mph (compared to 110mph). The manual gearbox achieves combined fuel economy of 47.1mpg – 7.3mpg better than the old model – with CO2 emissions of just 156g/km; a huge reduction of 31g/km. Even the new automatic outscores the previous manual model, with fuel consumption of 40.4mpg (versus 39.8mpg) and CO2 emissions of 183g/km (formerly 187mpg). It is also quicker and faster than the previous manual Sportage.
The ‘First Edition’ manual and automatic models therefore rest competitively in VED tax bands G and I respectively, meaning customers pay just £155 or £300 for their road tax in Year 1. For the manual model this remains the same in Year 2 and beyond, whilst the automatic reduces to £200 for Year 2 and all subsequent years.
Intelligent All-Wheel Drive
All ‘First Edition’ models gain Intelligent All-Wheel Drive as standard, and feature chrome AWD badges on each front wing. In normal, everyday driving conditions, the system drives in traditional front-wheel-drive mode in order to maximise fuel efficiency and driving performance. But the torque can be automatically redistributed by the system up to a maximum of 60:40 front-to-rear in order to enhance cornering stability or if road conditions deteriorate. For venturing totally off-road, driver’s can manually select lock mode, which gives a 50:50 torque split at speeds of up to 25mph.
Safety
Coupled to the AWD, a number of new electronic features have been added to the Sportage, increasing safety for on-road driving and the car’s capability for those owners who wish to go off-road or live in areas where bad weather and poor driving conditions are facts of life.
Standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC) counteracts any tendency for the car to understeer or oversteer in hard cornering or adverse conditions. It is linked to three additional systems similar to those on new Sorento – Downhill Brake Control (DBC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and a Roll-over Sensor.
DBC ensures the car maintains a steady and controlled speed of 5mph when descending steep slopes, whilst HAC has the reverse effect, preventing slip-back when setting off uphill and eliminating the possibility of wheelspin.
The Roll-over Sensor detects when the car might begin to roll over in the event of an accident and deploys the side and curtain airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners accordingly so that occupants are fully protected.
The overall safety package is further enhanced by 6 airbags, Front active head rests, ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Brake-Assist System, ISOFIX preparation, All-round 3-point seatbelts (height adjustable for the front seats), and Child safety rear door locks.
Equipment Levels
The ‘First Edition’ model is a highly equipped model, featuring the latest in innovative technology coupled with all the necessary specification to provide a luxurious and comfortable driving experience.
Featuring stunning, rimless 18” Alloy wheels, Privacy glass, silver Roof rails and chrome exterior highlights such as the front grille and exterior door handles, the First Edition is an eye-catching model on the road. Added to this are LED Daytime running lights, Body coloured, electric folding door mirrors with integrated LED indicators, Front fog lights and a Rear Spoiler with an integrated LED brake light.
Headlight technology is enhanced further with new Cornering Light technology, which increases the illumination of curbs and corners when driving round bends.
The interior cabin showcases luxurious black leather upholstery, in conjunction with heated seats for both front and rear passengers. The dashboard is highlighted by a stylish metallic finish, complemented by metallic interior door handles.
The upper centre dash console features a high-tech, 6-speaker audio system with RDS Radio / CD with MP3 disc compatibility, as well as USB & AUX ports and a standard fitment iPod cable. Useful steering wheel-mounted audio controls are fitted as standard, and include both Trip computer and Bluetooth buttons. The latter allows the driver to safely receive calls wirelessly and hands-free, once their phone is paired to the vehicle system. Bluetooth functionality also includes Voice Recognition as standard.
The lower portion of the centre stack is dominated by the Dual-zone Automatic Air Conditioning System (Climate Control) allowing both driver and front passenger to set their ideal cabin temperature. The system also features an Ionizer which purifies the air within the cabin.
Smaller items of equipment and finer attention-to-detail has not been overlooked on the ‘First Edition’, with items such as - Cruise control, Remote central locking with fold-away key, Rain-sensing, aeroblade front wipers, Auto light control, Tilt & telescopic steering wheel, Leather steering wheel & gearshift, Cooled glovebox and an Advanced anti-theft system including Immobiliser and Alarm – all fitted as standard.
An advanced reversing camera system with auto-dimming rearview mirror – like that featured on Soul and Sorento models – completes the ‘First Edition’ specification. Coupled to standard reversing sensors for an audible warning, the camera system transmits a visual image to an LCD colour display integrated into the rearview mirror.

Warranty
As announced on January 4th, all Kia models are now available with a 7 year/100,000 mile manufacturer warranty and the new Sportage is no exception. The longest warranty offered in Europe, this exceptional guarantee demonstrates the confidence Kia has in the design, build and quality of all its vehicles.
Each model also benefits from the traditional 1 year RAC roadside assistance package, which includes coverage of mainland Europe.
Servicing
As a result of Kia’s constant focus on customer satisfaction and cost of ownership, the all-new Kia Sportage benefits from extended service intervals. The service interval is 20,000 miles/12 months, whichever comes sooner.
The cost of ownership is lower than the previous model Sportage which is a major benefit for both retail and business customers.
Insurance Groups
We are delighted to confirm that both manual and automatic variants of the Sportage ‘First Edition’ are placed in Group 13 for Thatcham 1-50 insurance ratings. This group is exceptionally competitive, beating equivalent models such as the Hyundai iX35, Nissan Qashqai, Ford Kuga, Toyota RAV4 and Peugeot 3008 by up to as many as 7 groups. As a result these ratings add further weight to the attractive low cost of ownership of the new Kia Sportage.
