Exterior
Slightly longer than its predecessor, the small but mighty new Picanto measures 3.6 metres and with a head-turning design is destined to make a great first impression.
The Picanto’s signature ‘tiger-nose’ grille is distinctive yet unmistakably Kia, combined with stylish features including wrap-around LED daytime running headlights (on certain models) which significantly improve your visibility to oncoming traffic.
Key exterior differentiation with the mid grade ‘2’ includes front fog lights, alloy wheels, chrome door handles and LED side repeaters on the wing mirrors.
The top of the range ‘3’ model adds larger alloy wheels, LED lighting technology including LED daytime running lights, LED rear combination lamp and LED high mounted stop lamp resulting in a bold and assured presence.
Interior
The 5-seat Picanto’s new-found maturity is reflected in the interior design and the choice of sophisticated trim materials, which set a new benchmark in the A-sector for quality. All the major controls are arranged in a way that is attractive while ensuring they are easy to use.
The layout emphasises the width and space of the cabin and thanks to the Picanto’s long wheelbase, the cabin provides ample legroom whilst the 60:40 split-folding second row seats create more space and a practical luggage area. Standard convenience features include a driver’s seat height adjuster, tilt steering wheel adjustment, front electric windows, trip computer, and all-round height adjustable headrests (all 5 seats). In-car entertainment is provided by a standard RDS radio and CD player with MP3 compatibility with 4 speakers.
The Picanto 2 comes with manual air conditioning, an iPod cable, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, two additional speakers, electric and heated folding door mirrors with LED side repeaters, all-round electric windows, leather trimmed steering wheel and gear shift and Bluetooth with voice activation and recognition enabling you to make telephone calls conveniently and safely with the hands-free voice activated function.
The Picanto 3 adds automatic headlights with projection lamps, full automatic air conditioning, 6 speaker audio and you can even enjoy the luxury of heated front seats (with two heat settings) on cold mornings.
Dimensions
The new Picanto is only 60mm longer than its predecessor so that it still occupies slightly less than 3.6 metres of road space, but an increase of 15mm in wheelbase allied to some clever packaging ideas have resulted in significantly more cabin space. Front legroom has increased by 36mm, for example, while luggage capacity is 27% greater at 200 litres – and all with no change in the Picanto’s height or width.
Safety
Safety has benefited from a comprehensive approach. The Picanto boasts a full range of standard features that should an accident occur it ensures that all passengers are kept as secure as possible. The new Picanto’s defences begin with an incredibly stiff all-new body structure featuring a high percentage of high-strength steel with ring-shaped reinforcement hoops within the B-and C-pillars and additional bracing at the front between the cowl and suspension towers.
All versions have anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) to apportion stopping effort to the wheels with most traction, and emergency brake assist system (BAS), ensuring maximum stopping power regardless of the pressure applied to the pedal by the driver.
Hill-start Assist Control (HAC)
when the driver releases the brake pedal while setting off on slopes to help ensure it does not roll back. VSM connects the ESC and steering systems, improving the safety of the vehicle by detecting and minimising skidding by controlling over-steer in adverse conditions and helping to reduce the risk of accidents.
Hill-start assist control (HAC) is also standard. This holds the car briefly
Adaptive Brake Lights (Emergency Stop Signalling) are also a standard feature. When sensors detect a sharp deceleration in emergency braking conditions, the brake lights flash three times to warn other drivers that the car is braking sharply. This gives other motorists following behind more time to react and potentially avoid a hazardous situation ahead.
And should the worst happen, every Picanto has six airbags as standard (front, side and curtain) to cushion heads and torsos against impacts.
