New Swift In Brief
The all-new Swift is Suzuki’s latest world strategic model and makes strong developments in styling, impact safety, driving performance, handling, improved fuel consumption and significantly lower emissions.
Extensive use of higher strength steel makes the new bodyshell lighter and stiffer than before as well as offering refinement in underbody design. This latest design has also helped improve impact safety for pedestrians as well as occupants.
Increased track and larger diameter wheels with lower profile tyres allow for even better handling than the highly acclaimed outgoing Swift that was launched in May 2005.
The interior design now has a more dynamic feel, featuring black as its keynote colour with accents of silver throughout the car.
For even more space inside, Swift has grown slightly in length (+90mm) with a 50mm increase in wheelbase and 10mm increase in height.
The powertrain is a new Euro 5 compliant 1.2-litre petrol engine incorporating Dual VVT (Variable intake and exhaust Valve Timing) that produces 94PS at 6,000rpm, slightly more than the outgoing 1.3-litre unit. Torque is also improved to 118Nm at 4,800rpm.
New Swift is even more economical than before with fuel consumption on the combined cycle now 56.5mpg for the manual transmission model, an improvement of 7.8mpg over the previous 1.3-litre unit. Emissions are much lower as well; the new 1.2-litre engine with manual transmission produces just 116g/km on the combined cycle; representing a 24g/km or 17 per cent improvement over the previous 1.3. An optional four speed automatic transmission will be available from launch.
A revised 1.3-litre diesel engine will also be available and is planned for UK introduction in Spring 2011; this engine emits 109g/km (down from 119g/km) and has an impressive combined fuel consumption of 67.3mpg, improving on an already highly credible 62.8mpg from the outgoing Swift DDiS. This Euro 5 engine has more precise engine management than before with reduced levels of mechanical friction for smoother running and flexibility.
The new Swift is available in three and five door body styles and three clearly defined grades; SZ2, SZ3 and SZ4. All models have seven airbags as standard equipment including driver’s knee airbag as well as ESP.
In Detail
The Swift is the model with which Suzuki launched its world strategy. Produced at seven plants around the world, it is sold in more than 100 countries and territories. Its dynamic performance and sporty styling have earned it 63 Car of the Year awards in 19 countries and taken it to sales of one million units faster than any other model in the company’s history.
Now, Suzuki has realised even higher levels of Swift performance and styling and combined them with superior fuel economy and environmental performance to create a sports compact that is an ideal match for today’s needs. The result is the all-new Swift compact supermini.
Further-evolved dynamics, more emotionally appealing styling, and stronger environmental credentials make the new Swift an unmistakable embodiment of Suzuki’s “Way of Life!“ brand philosophy.
Suzuki aims for annual sales of about 100,000 units in Europe following the launch this Autumn with full year UK sales accounting for around 10,000 of these.
With the Swift, driving a compact car does not mean settling for less; within its modest dimensions, Suzuki has condensed all the performance, handling and other essentials for great enjoyment and satisfaction while easing the environmental burden. Carrying forward the previous model’s easy-to-manage compact dimensions, it hones its great design and performance while achieving lower CO2 emissions.
Unmistakably an evolution of its predecessor, the new Swift is even better in the ways that count most: more fun to drive thanks to exhilarating, sporty handling and lower CO2 emissions as well as being more attractive to look at, thanks to a more sophisticated sporty modern design. It’s an even clearer reflection of Suzuki’s desire to offer a sports compact that is perfectly suited to the lifestyles and demands of today.
The styling concept for the new Swift is “dynamic and energetic”. The new Swift inherits a look in which a short, wide, compact body appears to be bursting with energy, but it has evolved into a form with a more powerful emotional appeal and greater refinement. The overall impression is of a toned, athletic body that is elegantly clothed.
Viewed from the front; side or rear, Swift is unmistakably new with unique curves that give a sense of stability and with more emotional appeal than before; Suzuki’s design efforts are clearly reflected in the rear of the body. New Swift now has a stronger and more distinctive presence with timeless looks that will continue to appeal to owners over the long term.
In the cabin, Suzuki’s expertise in compact-car space efficiency is reflected in proportions that optimise roominess and comfort. However, the new Swift’s compact dimensions still leave plenty of space for rear passengers and their luggage. The interior design also creates a sharp, energetic look and is in tune with the new Swift’s performance. Dynamic, sporty forms and exquisite craftsmanship contribute to a great driving experience.
A new black-and-silver interior design is adopted throughout the interior for a sportier, more refined ambience. The instrument panel is distinguished by contrasts between a stylish black keytone colour and sharp silver-coloured details. This design continues for the seats with refined-looking silver-coloured details on bold, chic black fabric.
Suzuki developed new interior components with a focus on refinement in their look and feel. The newly designed details are also packed with user-friendly functionality and the overall result is a stronger sense of interior quality.
The keys to the Swift’s nimble handling include wide track and a short wheelbase. With the new Swift, Suzuki carries forward these fundamental attributes and refines them. New dimensions combine with increased rear-suspension firmness for better straight-line and cornering stability. They also add to a road-hugging profile that communicates the new Swift’s enhanced handling and performance. Full dimensions compared with the previous model are as follows:
The new Swift gives an even stronger sense of agility and improved stability through its newly refined wide-track, short-wheelbase, increased body and suspension rigidity as well as in greater roll stiffness. The handling reflects a newly evolved, more mature kind of sportiness and inspires even greater confidence in the driver.
Specially designed low-play joints in the steering-column shaft provide a firmer, more linear steering feel. The electric power steering system also has a newly adopted variable-gear-ratio design; a relatively quick ratio is adopted when the rack is near the centre point to make the car respond quickly at the start of a turn, while a relatively slow ratio near the steering wheel’s turning limits reduces the effort required for bigger turns. As a result, the new Swift responds more faithfully to every steering input from the driver.
The front suspension utilises MacPherson struts / coil springs together with an enhanced stabiliser layout which combine to give better roll stiffness without any weight penalties. The rear suspension utilises a torsion beam with coil springs which incorporates an enhanced inclination angle for the torsion-beam bushings, this provides 50 per cent more lateral rigidity in the bush mountings which results in better toe control. A new design structure torsion beam is now used which is lighter as well as providing greater roll stiffness.
The SZ3 and SZ4 models are fitted with 16-inch alloy wheels as standard; these are complemented by new rear disc brakes with aluminium-alloy callipers for SZ4 models. The SZ2 models with 15-inch steel wheels now have greater braking capacity than those of the previous Swift thanks to an increase in disc thickness from 20mm to 22mm.
The five-speed manual transmission has a newly adopted assist mechanism to reduce driver effort as well as an optimised shift-lever pattern to further promote smoothness. As in the previous generation Swift, a four-speed fully automatic transmission with a new straight shift pattern is available for SZ3 and SZ4 models.
Extensive use of higher-strength steel makes the new Swift’s body stiffer and lighter. The higher body rigidity and a lower centre of gravity softens the suspension without making the ride feel unsteady. The overall result is a superior combination of stability and comfort.
Suzuki’s engineers paid particular attention to giving new Swift an even quieter ride and have taken extensive measures against noise and vibration.
A car’s outside door mirrors are the main cause of wind noise. For the new Swift, Suzuki has optimized the shape of the outside mirrors through extensive computer-aided simulations, detailed wind-tunnel tests and investigations using a system for pinpointing sources of noise. Suzuki took a multi-faceted approach, not only suppressing the level of wind noise but also ensuring that the noise occurs as far as possible from the ears of occupants. The difference in the cabin is unmistakable.
Increased body rigidity and increased rigidity in the joints between components are utilised to suppress the generation and transmission of noise. The benefits are complemented by extensive engine, transmission, clutch, suspension, and tyre revisions.
New Swift has more comprehensive sound insulation than before with the use of sound-absorbing silencers and other high-performance acoustic parts. Sealant around the cabin plays a key part in keeping noise out and allows a comfortable and quiet environment for occupants.
The new Swift’s Euro 5 engines (K12B 1.2-litre petrol and D13A 1.3-litre DDiS diesel) reflect Suzuki’s focus on combining eco-friendliness with great driving pleasure. They each offer lower fuel consumption and fewer emissions together with higher output and torque by means of smaller displacements and numerous other technological measures including, for the 1.2 petrol engine, Variable Valve Timing for both inlet and exhaust.
For some European markets, an Auto Stop Start System is available for the 1.2-litre petrol engine (Not available in the UK, currently under consideration for introduction)
Without the Auto Stop Start system, CO2 emissions are just 116g/km for the K12B engine with an annual VED charge of just £30. The D13A diesel, available next year, emits 109g/km which is 10g/km fewer than the previous generation Swift unit.
Fuel consumption for the new petrol engine has improved by 16 per cent over the outgoing 1.3–litre unit to 56.5mpg and the revised 1.3-litre DDiS engine has improved by around 7 per cent to 67.3mpg.
