Chris Doran - Band 1 Winner
Darius Knight - Band 1 Runner-up
Sean Molloy - Band 2 Winner
Stewart Laws - Band 2 Runner-up
On Saturday 24th June, Wensum Table Tennis Club hosted a 1 Star National Ranking Tournament at Catton Grove School in Norwich, thanks to sponsorship from NMG Suzuki.
The event attracted 32 players from around the country, including no.7 and no.8 in England, Chris Doran and Darius Knight, as well as many top local players.
The first round saw the field split into groups of 4, with the top 2 players in each group going through to Band 1 and the bottom 2 players going through to Band 2.
There were some notable performances from local players saw Stephen Clubb beat Irishman Rory Scott, Chris Cockburn take an end against Darius Knight and Wensum juniors Alex McRobie and Ed Horton both winning matches in their first senior ranking event.
As expected, the Band 1 showpiece final saw Darius Knight take on Chris Doran, and the crowd were treated to some fantastic table tennis that saw Doran triumph in an epic 5th set that saw him save match points before taking the title in deuce.
In Band 2, Sean Molloy and Stuart Laws saw off all comers, showing the strength in depth of the Norwich League as the local lads contested the final, with Molloy winning 3-1.
Many thanks to Wensum Table Tennis Club for hosting, the local officials for organising, and the sponsors NMG for supporting local table tennis.

NMG and Table Tennis
Sprowston Community Table Tennis Club assisted by Stuart Laws coaching has been running since November 2015 on the back of a successful Sport England bid for tables and equipment. Then with the help of Active Norfolk a Satellite club began. Since then a Fit & Fun session for the inactive and the Satellite club have amalgamated into a two hour weekly session running on Mondays 7pm to 9pm. The session is open to all ages and abilities with coaching, social play and competition offered for those that want it. Presently there are over twenty members regularly attending to pay and play.
The club recently held a successful coaching weekend with international coach Migual Ventura leading the sessions. There was a good mix of players from top players across the region, as well as juniors and local club players. In total sixty-four players attended across the three days of practice.
In July Hannah Hicks is attending the club to run a junior training camp. To help with the camp, sponsorship was obtained from Norfolk Motor Group, who will supply the participants with a sports towel and drinks bottle and have also supplied interior, exterior signage and programmes.
NMG have also sponsored the sister club at Wymondam where Stuart is also a coach and player, alongside several NMG customers. The league was renamed to NMG Wymondham & District Table Tennis League in 2014 and is now in its 3rd season of sponsorship with NMG. The recent annual finals tournament saw some fierce competition, it was played at the Watton Sports & Leisure Centre. Here too NMG supplied the participants with a sports towel and drinks bottle, interior, exterior signage, trophies and programmes.
All the clubs are always looking for new players at all levels - from absolute beginners to County players, from age 8 to 90 (it really is an all-inclusive sport!). Season starts in September and new teams will be more than welcome. They also run a thriving Summer League and play interleague matches against Norwich, Fakenham, North Walsham, Kings Lynn, Diss and Great Yarmouth.
Coaching sessions are run at both Ketts Park (Friday nights, September through to June - call Ian Scales on 01953 602180 if you have any queries) and Watton Leisure Centre (every Wednesday evening - call Dave Attridge 01760 336616) with qualified coaches at all three clubs. New members will always be welcome, whatever the standard.
